HRV and ERV units

The 28 units in our reviewed list, with their certified airflow, heat recovery and CO2 control. They’re units to ask about, not a recommendation: an installer may propose another, and the app checks any HVI-certified unit against what your bedrooms need.

What matters most:enough fresh air for the bedrooms at night, at the duct pressure your installer designs for. HRV or ERV?

HRV or ERV, in plain words
  • Fresh in, stale out Two fans swap stale indoor air for outdoor air all night, and can supply a closed bedroom.
  • Keeps much of the heat The two streams pass through a core, so winter air comes in warmed. An open window can’t.
  • HRV or ERV? HRV: heat recovery ventilator (heat). ERV: energy recovery ventilator (heat and some moisture).
  • Not a purifier A purifier cleans the air you have but brings none in, so CO2 stays put.
Words you’ll see here
cfm (and L/s)
Units of airflow: each person sleeping in a room needs about 17–21 cfm (8–10 L/s) of outdoor air to keep it near 800 ppm.
HVI-certified
HVI certifies HRVs and ERVs and lists each unit’s airflow at several duct pressures, so a quoted model can be looked up.
Heat recovery at 32°F
How much heat an HRV or ERV hands from the outgoing air to the incoming air, rated at 32°F and worth asking for in every quote.

Certified airflow and efficiency from the HVI directory (exported September 23, 2026), joined to each exact model by its HVI number. Makers’ facts from our review of August 31, 2026. ENERGY STAR from Natural Resources Canada’s list, checked October 19, 2026 (ENERGY STAR certifies HRVs and ERVs only in Canada). Equipment prices are what a US retailer listed when we checked (October 2026, or August where that’s all we found), before tax, freight and installation.

Start with the bedrooms

A few nights with a CO₂ monitor show how much fresh air each bedroom needs. Then the app checks whatever unit an installer quotes.
