Questions and answers

About CO₂, the goal and HouseExhale. More about bedroom CO2.

What should my bedroom’s CO2 be?
800 ppm or less, on average, while you sleep. That’s the precautionary target the researchers behind a 2025 review of 17 sleep studies for ASHRAE propose for bedrooms; sleep was slightly but measurably more disturbed from about 1,000. Bedroom CO2 questions and answers.
Is a high CO2 reading dangerous?
Not as a poison: bedroom levels are far below any safety limit. It matters because it shows how little fresh air is reaching you, and in sleep studies people slept measurably worse in rooms averaging 1,000 ppm or more than in rooms near 750. Lab studies have also linked levels around 1,000 ppm to lower scores on decision-making tests, and new research keeps coming out. Does CO2 affect how you think? · What CO2 can and can’t tell you
Do I need to buy a monitor?
You need one that measures true CO2 (it usually says NDIR or photoacoustic). If you already have an Aranet4 or a SwitchBot Meter Pro CO2, use it. If not, true CO2 monitors start at about $50–$70 (checked October 2026). Help me choose a monitor.
What does the app cost?
Nothing to download or use today. You pay for the monitor, and for a ventilation system only if you decide you need one.
Where does my data go?
Your readings, rooms and notes stay on your phone. If you sign in, a copy syncs to your HouseExhale account, so you can see your room report on the web, type in quotes as they arrive by email, print the report for an installer, and restore it all on a new phone. You can delete that copy any time. The app does count a few steps, like your first night, against a random ID (never your readings), and tells the ad company if you came from an ad; you can turn that off. Is there an iPhone app?
Not yet. On iPhone, use HouseExhale in Safari and add it to your home screen; you type the night’s high each morning or import your monitor’s CSV. The Android app is coming to Google Play. Until then, use the web app in your phone’s browser. Get HouseExhale on your phone.
Where do the installers in the app come from?
From our research of their public pages, and they’re marked that way in the app. You can add any company you like. Quote requests go from your own email, and nothing is sent for you.

Using the app

Phones, monitors, and keeping your nights. How it works.

Which phones does it work on?
The Android app is coming to Google Play. Until then, use the web app in your phone’s browser. There’s no iPhone app yet. Use HouseExhale in Safari and add it to your home screen. The web version works in any browser: you type one number each morning, and reminders go to your calendar. Get HouseExhale on your phone.
Which monitors record the night by themselves?
An Aranet4 pairs once with the Android app, which reads each night from the monitor’s memory. SwitchBot, Qingping and INKBIRD monitors record overnight with the Android app. On iPhone, in a browser, or with any other true (NDIR or photoacoustic) CO2 monitor, type the night’s high each morning or import a CSV. Which monitors work.
How do I add a night by hand, or from my monitor’s app?
Each morning, type the night’s high from your monitor. Or export a CSV from your monitor’s own app and import it: tap the gear at the top of any screen, then Back up and restore → Import a night from a CSV.
The Android app can’t find my monitor.
Keep the monitor close to the phone and tap Find my monitor again. Android asks only for Nearby devices, never your location. If it was turned down, the app’s Open Settings button takes you there: Permissions → Nearby devices → Allow. With a SwitchBot, Qingping or INKBIRD, leave the phone in the bedroom overnight.
Nights aren’t coming through on Android.
Phones save battery by pausing apps at night. In the app, the gear → Help → Sync report shows what your phone did overnight, with no readings or room names. Copy it into your email to us.
How do I put HouseExhale on my home screen?
On iPhone, in Safari: the Share button, then Add to Home Screen. On Android, in Chrome: the menu, then Add to Home screen. It opens like an app, from the same place every time.
Can I use HouseExhale with Claude, ChatGPT or another AI assistant?
Yes. Add HouseExhale as a connector in your assistant’s settings, and it answers with the same checks as the app: your readings against the 800 goal, whether a quoted unit is big enough, installers and rebates. How to connect it.
How do I keep my nights, or move them to a new phone?
Sign in to keep a copy in your account: tap the gear at the top of any screen, then Sign in to sync your journal. Sign in on the new phone and everything comes back, and your report and quotes are on the web dashboard too. Without an account, the gear → Back up and restore saves your journal as a file you can restore.
